Yoga is an ancient discipline of Indian Philosophy. According toB.K.S. Iyengar(1996) the word Yoga originatesfrom the Sanskrit root "YUJ" which means " to unite or integrate". In other words, Yoga is the union of the body, mind, emotions and intellect and is focused on develop an maintain a balance between body, mind and spirit.
In order to succeed in having a balance between them, Yoga practitioners use exercise, postures, breath, relaxation and meditation. Furthermore, it is believed body is an essential intrument in practitioner's work and development. The practice of Yoga exercises includes perseverance to accomplish each posture and the use of both mind and body. For this reason, taking Yoga classes from an experienced instructor is the best way to practice Yoga.
Yoga is a complex discipline which has many definitions and branches. The Yoga practitiones of the University of Quintana Roo use the Iyengar System which is considered as a complete system that contains different styles of Yoga and concentrates on Asanas (postures), Pranayama (breathing techniques) and meditation.

Yoga postures, named Asanas in Sanskrit (classical Indian Language), are body movements which strenghten one's back, muscles and tones. Asanas have been practiced for a long time due to its efectiveness in practitioner's life. There are many types of postures and can be divided in Seated and twist, Standing, Arm balances, Core, Backbends, Forward bends, Inversions and restorative.
Patanjali wrote in the Yoga Sutras "Sthira Sukha Asanam" which says the results of Asanas are stability and feeling of well-being. These results make the differencece between Asanas and exercise. If Asanas do not generate stability and feeling of well-being, they would be only exercise. Furthermore, is highly recomended to get the guidance from an experienced Yoga instructor when you decide to attend yoga classes because many postures should be performed step by spep and slowly and they can not be practiced merely from books.
