Yoga is an ancient discipline of Indian Philosophy. According to B.K.S. Iyengar (1996) the word Yoga originates from the Sanskrit root "YUJ" which means " to unite or integrate". In other words, Yoga is the union of the body, mind, emotions and intellect and is focused on develop an maintain a balance between body, mind and spirit.
In order to succeed in having a balance between them, Yoga practitioners use exercise, postures, breath, relaxation and meditation. Furthermore, it is believed body is an essential intrument in practitioner's work and development. The practice of Yoga exercises includes perseverance to accomplish each posture and the use of both mind and body. For this reason, taking Yoga classes from an experienced instructor is the best way to practice Yoga.
Yoga is a complex discipline which has many definitions and branches. The Yoga practitiones of the University of Quintana Roo use the Iyengar System which is considered as a complete system that contains different styles of Yoga and concentrates on Asanas (postures), Pranayama (breathing techniques) and meditation.
